Mains water supply leaks
Unexpected usage can come from a leaking supply pipe or a fitting inside the property. The first task is to establish which section needs attention.
Discuss this problemLook at the whole supply
A meter can record use by toilets, appliances, tanks, irrigation and outbuildings as well as taps. A moving reading therefore needs context before it is treated as proof of a buried leak. Let us know which supplies serve the property.
Use isolation to narrow the search
Where suitable and authorised, isolation and pressure checks can distinguish internal pipework from the external private supply. Access to the meter and stop taps matters; do not force a stiff valve or interfere with a shared supply.
Consider the route and surface
An external pipe may pass beneath landscaping or a hard surface before entering the building. Acoustic listening or tracer gas may help narrow the area. The investigation should inform excavation rather than relying solely on where water appears.
Share any notice or prior test
Water-company letters, meter observations and details of earlier checks help avoid repeating work. Confirm responsibility for the suspected section before instructing repairs.
